EU Biotech Act: boosting the biomass-derived chemicals sector

Biotechnology and biomanufacturing are cornerstone sectors for the European Union’s economic growth, sustainability, and global competitiveness. These technologies drive innovation across healthcare, agriculture, energy, and industrial production—contributing directly to the EU’s Green Deal objectives and strategic autonomy. However, Europe’s competitive position in these sectors is jeopardized. Increasing regulatory complexity, uneven approval procedures and policy implementation across Member States, limited access to stable, high-quality feedstocks, and uncompetitive low-carbon energy costs are constraining investment and industrial deployment.
